question about food grade plastic

I have some icing sheets that are backed by a sheet of plastic. I haven't been able to get the specs on the plastic, but I think it's safe to assume it's food safe. My question is, would it be safe to laser cut the icing + plastic backing together ?

I doubt it. The plastic backing is vaporized when it is laser cut and some of the vapor will remain on the cut edge of the icing. Just because the plastic is "food safe" does not mean it is safe to consume. Also the plastic vapor's composition is different than the plastic itself. Chemical compounds can be released.
