I am building an accent ring for a 12 segment bowl. Using the attached picture, each AR segment is 7 high with the middle 5 being 3 pieces of wood apiece. So would the total be 15 + 2, or 17 per segment x 12 equals 194?

I agree with Thom at 204 Now Tom show us the finished product we will be waiting

You guys are correct. My bad. The question was around the fact that each segment actually comes from a triangle and 2 end pieces. These are then ripped and rearranged into the 5 middle pieces, then a single border above and below. So is the segment 5 pieces (the original 3 plus top and bottom) or 17. I vote for the 17.

Thanks

Ah, I see. So is it:

3 (triangle) + 5 (slices) + 2 (caps) = 10 or

5 x 3 + 2 = 17?

I go with 17, thats what the finished piece shows, it does not matter how you got there.

Tom, I think I understand the question. Since I assume you will be using solid blocks above and below (rings of 12) that will bridge the joint, then I think labeling each stack as 1 segment of 17 pieces makes sense. You still get to account for each piece when calculating the total, so 204 for this ring.
