Someone brought me a large root section of "driftwood" brought up from the bottom of Kentucky Lake. Here is the first piece from it, I have a large section with cracks that I haven't tackled yet. Any guesses? Red Oak maybe?

I don't think it's Red Oak.

With those ray flecks, it looks like Sycamore... or Beech. But the ray flecks on Beech are much more subtle, so I'm going to go with Sycamore.

How big is this bowl?

It's also a really wet piece of sycamore. I'll bet you got a shower when you turned it.

I have to agree it looks like sycamore.

If it isn't sycamore, it is London Plane, which is almost exactly the same thing. Super for bowls.

Cool. The sycamore I've turned in the past didn't have this dark rosy hue and much less pronounced rays. I wonder if this is a product of submersion, it being a root section or both.

I have'nt yet had the chance to turn sycamore but of what I have seen from others that have this sure looks like it.

It sure looks like the Sycamore I have turned. A simple oil (Walnut or Grape Seed) finish does well for a using piece and helps the grain show.
