Figured I would throw this one out there as well. This is the other half of the large Maple burl I was gifted last year. Hard to see some of the amazing grain in the photos but it should prove to be a real beauty once finished. Like the other form, this one was full of bark pockets, rot and or course the traditional ant colony!

It was put in the DNA yesterday… so will be a couple of months before it gets finish turned.

Also, note that I used Jerry Marcantel's Chuck Plate. I find that I use it for everything these days and it sure came in handy with this piece because I had to change the center 4 or 5 times before I could get the shape I wanted. You can find out how to build your own Chuck Plate in Jerry's article, located on the front page of the Creek.

As always, opinions, comments and/or critiques are welcomed!

Thanks for looking!

Love this form, Steve. Very classic. Can't wait to see it finished. I, also, love my Jerry Marcantel chuck plate variant.

Jim - this one is roughly 14" tall by 10" diameter. Not sure about the dye... will give it some more thought once it has been final turned.

That's a great looking hunk of burl, Steve! Especially in the last pic!!! Amazing what you find hiding in those things....

Charlie... I used my thumb on the dizzy ones and the shop vac when I hit the mother load! By the time the form made it to the DNA... there were no survivors.

That piece looks like it's been sitting on the bed of the Mediterranean Sea for the past 2,000 years, Very kewl!

Steve, it looks great. I couldn't help but notice the steady rest you used. It appears you use it to support the piece. Would you please comment on if you made it, how you did it if you did, and how you use it.
