I was able to get my hands on a few maple burls last fall and this is the largest of the forms I was able to turn from it. I hollowed it out green using my Kobra but returned it free hand. It is just a little heavier than the basket ball in the last picture. I was able to turn this form thinner than any of my large forms in the past by adjusting my measuring device to match David Ellsworth's which he used in his demo I was able to see a few months back. The wood is maple burl, finish is just a few coats of lacquer which I will add to and buff soon. The last photo shows this form next to a basket ball to give one a reference to the size.

Really pretty form and wood, Jack. Where did you get a tiny basketball? Just kidding! If you hollow by hand, that one must have given you a ride. The opening appears relatively small so I am sure you weren't in there with a 1" boring bar. Nice soft finish for lacquer.

Big and beautiful. Fantastic job turning and perfect form. The finish as is looks so good. As big as it is I wonder if gloss might be over bearing?

I love how you were able to save the NE on the top. This has very nice form and has really great variations in the wood color and texture. Very well Done.

Jack, nice job. The wood is beautiful. The clear finish is perfect for that piece as is the opening.... Is that Ambrosia Beetle tracks that is at the near bottom in the second to last picture????......... Jerry (in Tucson)

Thanks for all the kind compliment's everyone. I am very pleased with the way this one turn out and it is the first bowl in a couple years that my wife claimed for her own. Of coarse she sees all the bowls I finish and for her to keep one is a great compliment in its self. This burl came from a tree I drove by for years and admired the burls all over it. Last year the house and adjoining houses that it was in front of where demolished to make room for a small industrial area. I stopped by and asked about the tree and the workers said that it had already been giving to a local guy to cut into lumber which didn't make me very happy since the burls would most likely be trimmed off any lumber. The tree had been gone for months when I got a call from the person who got the tree. He is an extraordinary talented flat worker who makes one of a kind pieces of furniture. He had cut the burls off before slabbing the log up and had no use for them and thought that I might. I ended up with 3 burls this being the largest and a very large smile on my face. I have another form just like this one just a little smaller to finish up soon from these burls.
Thanks Again,
Jack Mincey
