Hey All,
Here is a piece I just finished that is #2 of a collection named "Spring Emerges." Its named "Follow the Sun." It and other pieces will be the focal point of my opening and show this fall at the Strawn Art Gallery. It is a combination of Australian Red Mallee, Brown Mallee, Black Ash and Purple Leaf Plum. All the Pedestals are Ebonized Holly. The finials are also Holly. The Base is a slab of burled California Redwood. The base finish is Satin lacquer. Two of the flowers are dyed with a power Dye and then Lacquered. The others are finished with several coats of Tung Oil and then buffed when dried. Hope you like it. Your comments and critiques are always welcome. Thanks.

I like it Ken. I'd have to agree that the show will be a hit. Well done on this piece and I do like the base too. Makes me think about plants that grow out of a rock!

Ken,
How do you bend the stems of the flowers?

Thomas,
Thanks for asking. Some others have asked also, so here goes. I use Holly for the stems. After I finish turn the pedestals/stems, I soak them in a bath of warm water for 3-4 hours. While in the water, I start to bend them ever so slightly and continue for a short period of 3-4 minutes. After that I find a radius such as a paint can or larger item and I start by taping the base to the can with thin foil tape, and continue up the stem until the top is in contact with the can. I then allow it to dry overnight and after removing the tape, the pedestal/stem is permanently formed in an arch with each one a little different, and yes, I have broken a few because they were just to thin to bend. I then continue with whatever finish that I want to use. I hope this explains it well enough.

It would look much better at my house. :D I really like it. I don't think I could ever imitate it. Not adequately anyway.
