I made this years ago and after seeing Kathy's clever carving holder (THANKS KATHY!), I thought I'd share this. It is made totally from plumbing parts available in any hardware store. The wood base can be clamped to any bench, and the post can be turned or tilted, making it very versitile. Hope this helps folks who want to carve & not spend BIG$$$$$$$

Looks good Michelle. Simple but looks like it works well.

I forgot to say that one can use the Lee Valley post that has threads in 1x8 and 1-1/4 x 8 etc..that way you can clamp the post & keep your chuck on your piece..

Made one just like that many years ago, using plans from a contest by Woodcarving Illustrated. When I started turning, I made a post for it from a 1" bolt, cutting off the head of the bolt. Then I found an eyebolt to fit the 1" bolt, and can put my chucks directly into the vise. Works real well.
