I rent a house with a steep hardwood stair. We just got a little Russell Terrier who can climb a few steps but will not tackle this staircase. I think he's showing good judgement as they are too slippery for him. I need to put some form of nonslip, either carpet or rubber on the treads but ideally it would be reverseable so I don't have to refinish the hardwood treads when we leave. Is there any adhesive or double faced tape that would for the bill?

There are a few things available to handle the problem, but they are not reversible.

Have you talked to your landlord about the steps?

They may be willing to let you do the fix without having to remove it down the road. It sounds like it could release them from a bit of liability.

Thats my next step (so to speak). I was thinking about making something that hooks on the front of the treads and then screws into the risers (which are painted and could be touched up). It would be nonslip -- say thin plywood covered in rubber or painted with nonslip.

You might try something in a runner and some stair rods or clips, dowels and discrete screws ought to work or something more http://www.stair-rods.com/page/homepage_1.cfm perhaps.

Thanks for the link -- the house is modern but I think I can make something up like the rods that would be in keeping and reasonably reversible.
