I posted another cherry hf the other day and Mike Cruz asked if I had any before and after pics. I didn't but I turned this one the other day and took some pics along the way. This one has a lot more wood and a lot less air but it gives somewhat of an idea of how one of these pieces with the voids evolves. This is about 7.5 x 7 inches. The wood was turned green from start to finish and was cracking and moving throughout the process. But I kind of like these more rustic turnings so that's the way I do most of mine.

I was trying to take a video that would show how you can see the hollowing tool working inside the form with the voids which for me makes it a lot easier because I don't have a laser. I took a couple short segments and then at the very end just as I was trying to hold the hollower, play the guitar, and turn off the camera all at the same time, I bumped the D-bar and hit the form with the cutter. It knocked a pretty big chunk out of the HF at the opening. So I glued it back in and finished it as best I could. Oh well.

Very nice piece Curt, and thank you for taking the time to take photo's of the process. It really helps in my understanding of how some of the beautiful pieces shown on SMC are made and what they started out like.
Thanks

Curt,
I like all your voided pieces. This one has a lot of character and color. Form is also very nice. well done.

Curt - too bad about the bump... but that does happen every now and then! Beautiful wood but the form is what stands out to me! You sure have a eye talent this stuff! Thanks for sharing!

Curt,
Nice video, and I love the guitar playing also (I am trying to learn some picking). Some thing you may want to fiddle around with that I noticed when doing some filming: the camera is a strobe light, and if you play around with the rpm on your lathe, you may be able to 'stop' the wood while turning to better see the tool. I have noticed that some times the wood seems to rotate forwards, or backwards, or even stay still.
