Here is the end result of a HF trade on Woodturners America, with Chuck Jones. Very similar to the last pyro'd piece but I thought it might be different to throw in a spiraling pattern wrapping around, from the top to the bottom.

Turned from some more of that plain Jane silver maple. About 6 1/2" tall and 3 1/4" wide. Black dye on the outside and satin lacquer to seal it up. African blackwood finial.

Comments and critiques are always welcome, thanks.

Scott, that's really gorgeous! Wish I could see more pictures or even study it in person. Is the basketweave or checkerboard pattern made with a woodburner as Molly Winton does? How are the oval shaped patterns made? Great job!

Scott, that's really gorgeous! Wish I could see more pictures or even study it in person. Is the basketweave or checkerboard pattern made with a woodburner as Molly Winton does? How are the oval shaped patterns made? Great job! Bill, the pattern was branded in with a woodburner. Molly makes her own little coil and double stamps for her "pattern". I use a 1/4" flat tip and brand 5-6 lines and then rotate 90 degrees. For the spiral pattern I made a teardrop-esk tip and use that, but often it stamped something that looked like a backwards "6"!

Beautiful piece Scott! I think the spiral adds to what was already a beautiful piece. I'm sure Chuck is going to love it!
A little off topic.... where do you get your nichrome wire from?

you made plain Jack maple into a piece of art. This maybe my favorite of your pieces. the spiral decoration just makes this sing. Your finial is up to your usual standards.

Wonderful work Scott. You and your burner are becoming 'one'! I need to practice more with mine...patience is biggest thing. Stuff like this takes some concentration and focus that blurs easily (for me anyway)!

Scott,
This is an excellent piece. It flows from top to bottom and the pyro pattern adds a very nice feature to it. The color is also a great choice. Well Done.

Kathy,

I just bought some nichrome wire from "http://jacobs-online.biz/nichrome_wire.htm". They have it in 10ft. pieces which works good for me and it was $7.25 for the 18 gauge with free shipping.

Paul is on to something here. DON'T get conned into buying a bunch of the NiChrome wire. I bought 2 different gauges of it and I believe both rolls were 25' rolls. I have only used about 6" total wire! So by my calculations, my 2 rolls of 25' is a 10 year+ supply! I could see the possiblity of some very fine wire eventually "burning out" but even with my Burnmaster cranked all the way up to LAVA, I am still using the same homemade tips. Just an FYI.
