Hi all,

I'm not really sure what this is. As you can see from the pictures, it's 3" long, says Stanley, has two adjustment bolts with wing nuts, and has a patent date of Oct. 11-04. It obviously clamps down on something, but what? I initially thought it was part of a Stanley 45 plow plane, but it doesn't appear on other pictures of 45s that I've seen. Your help in solving this mystery is greatly appreciated! :)

No.49 auger bit gauge. It wraps around an auger bit and allows you to drill to a certain depth with a brace.

I have one and it works great. Lately I have been using Roy Underhill's method of counting the turns and it's surprisingly accurate.

I have one and it works great. Lately I have been using Roy Underhill's method of counting the turns and it's surprisingly accurate.

I also use the counting turns from when the bevels first start cutting when I want to stop before breaking through.

The #49 works well as long as there isn't something close to the hole for it to bump against. It can also leave scratches in the surface if one isn't careful.

Finally, keep an eye on where it is on a bit. A lot of use can make it drift a little.
