Bringing a Delta Homecraft bandsaw back to life and looking at the motor it has an oil cap on one end of the motor and just a wick sticking out of the other end. I assume I am missing an oil cap, but my real question is what type of oil for the motor bearings? I was reaching for the 3-1 oil, but stopped myself and thought I would ask here first.

Thanks in advance.

Any hardware store should sell the electric motor oil. There is 3 in 1 version, which is not the general multi-purpose oil that most have. See: http://www.amazon.com/3-IN-ONE-10045-Motor-Oil-oz/dp/B00065VGUC

Other electric motor oil versions would work too, like Singer sewing machine oil. Here is a link to the same question and answer on another site: http://www.electronicspoint.com/re-electric-motor-oil-t249808.html

Many fractional horsepower motors were made for use with SAE 20 or 30 monograde oils, which is still available in litre sizes................Rod.

IN the 60's we would oil furnace blower motors with 30 weight non detergent oil. NEVER 3 in one oil which has wax in it.

+1 on the 30 weight ND. I use it for most everything.

Just got home and found some 3-1 at a true value Hardware store, going to use it. If it kills the old motor no great loss. It has to be better than the no oil I think it has in it now.

Thanks for all the suggestions

Dripless motor oil. Comes in a small can like 3-in-1.

Have never heard of that, will see if I can find some.

Going to get some 30wt ND and add it to my supply locker for future use.
