If anyone is interested in making a steady rest, the Woodworker's Jounal ezine is offering free downloadable plans for one made of wood and skateboard wheels. Looks like it would work well for smaller hollow forms.
Don't know how long this plan will be available for free, so I downloaded it in case I wanted to make one in the future.:D

You should search on steady rest plans. Steve schlumpf had a great article on building you own using roller blade wheels. I built the same one and it works great.

Jeff Nicol makes one of the beefiest steady rests I've come across, and though he isn't currently making them while he finishes up other projects, he provides plans on his website. I made one using this design and it's very stout and will surely outlast me! http://www.woodennicol.com/tools.html
