For Mother's Day 2011, I made Mom a couple of boxes to hold the pics that were overflowing a shoebox in her office. She filled them both up pretty quick so I have a perfect excuse to make her a couple more for her birthday 2012. No awards for "golden" dimensions here; just a form follows function shape to hold her photos. I made off with one of the boxes from last year to be sure I got the dimensions right. It is surprising how dark the cherry has gotten in just a year or so.
I had some of the original cherry left from last year. Once milled it showed the usual light cherry color. On small projects I usually use hand tools more than not but, used the tablesaw and sled to cut the fingers as has become my method.

I rough fit them, clamp them and route for the tops and bottom using a slot bit and the router table.

Here is one dry fit straight off the machines. Tops and bottoms are floating. The handwork ahead will make the two of them look more like their cousin shown in the background. Finish will be the same as the originals; clear shellac and paste wax.
