Elm Fluted Hollow Form

A few weeks ago someone suggested we view a slideshow on Liam Flynn hosted by FWW. I really enjoyed seeing his work. I had a piece of elm (American I think) that was perfect for a Flynn inspired hollow form. It is 7" tall and 8" wide. I turned it to 3/8" thick to be sure not to carve through and still leave substance. I carved the flutes with a combination of #8 and #11 Pfeil carving gouges. I wanted the curve to continue through the bottom of the form so after carving I turned away the tenon and left a narrow ring. I turned the completion of the shape inside the ring and carved away all but the tiny feet. The flutes are unsanded, the sharp gouges leaving a slight faceted surface that is quite smooth. The finish is one coat of Linseed oil, several coats of shellac and three coats of gloss lacquer. I rubbed the gloss down with bronze wool then buffed and waxed. I enjoyed making this one so much I am now working on a larger cherry vessel. I believe the carving may have a unique "twist".

Beautiful work Faust, this is a pleasing form we don't see and your fluting is top notch. The flow under the piece couldn't be better with the small feet. Great job on the finish as well.
