Gloat and Question

I had the opurtinity to pick up some new (to me) items this week. The PM 66 cabe from a cabinet shop that was upgrading to a MiniMax CU410. Everything checks out great except that when you shut it down, there is a large clunk as the motor slows. It is the 3 hp single phase motor by Baldor. Does this have a brake in the motor? Is this something to be concerned about?

The other items that I got were a Performax SuperMax 25-2 and a Jet 6x89 edge sander and a Jet BDS 499 drum and brush sander. They were very reasonably priced so my sop got some upgrades.

excellent haul..love to see shop pictures. looks like you have a nice one.

to my knowlege the pm66 does not have a brake. I hate to say it, but it sounds like a pully on a shaft that has a keyway, has gotten sloppy. That clunk has to do with one of newton's laws of motion.... a body in motion tends to stay in motion and all of that. The inertia of the motor and the blade will be different and if there is some slop in the drive train those will manifest themselves in what you may be hearing. Just unplug the guy and then see if you can locate the noise by rocking things back and forth. That is what I would try first

The clunk comes as the saw is about 2/3 of the way to stopping? After the clunk, it continues to coast to a stop. Could it be the starter switch in the motor? There is no corresponding noise on startup, so I might think that it was not a loose pulley, but I WILL check that out. I did find a few loose screws and set screws here and there.

I've heard numerous mentions of this "clunk" thing, not just with PMs. Let us know what you find out.

I can't make my mind up whether to get a big edge sander or a combo disc and belt sander. Maybe I should just get both :rolleyes:

Nice looking group there! I'm particularly interested in the side extension table. It looks like you have a router table as well as an overarn blade gaurd. Does the guard interfere with use of the router table?

Great stuff! I have the same PM 66 and don't have the clunk...I can't explain it . There is no electric brake...A great saw though

My new saw had a kinda clunk when I turned it off until I put a new belt on it. Maybe the belt has a worn spot?

The reason for the clunk on slowing down is old cracked and dried up belts that were not properly tensioned. Also, one of the bearings in the arbor has a slight click, so tomorrow morning new belts and bearings will be ordered.

I tightened up the belts and the clunk went away.
