Welcome to SMC.

You should be using rgb black. You have way more than enough power to work with Cermark so I would suggest running a number or test settings to optimize performance.

A search on SMC will provide several examples.

Devon can you explain what and how you are engraving so we understand the issue better?

i am printing a vector graphic on a piece of ss that has been da with 80grit

cust does not like cermark they like the brown burn that the laser leaves on ss

my results are never consistant sometimes to light sometimes reall dark sometimes i cant see parts of it at all

Devon I have never heard of doing SS the way you are so I am not going to be able to advise on this sorry. Hopefully one of the other guys might have some insight.

On my YAG laser I can turn stainless or titanium black by putting the laser about 3 or 4mm out of focus. It won't work when it's in focus. You might experiment with focus to see what happens.

Try spraying the area with a light coat of nitro-cellulose laquer. The laquer seems to act as an accelerant.

I don't think you will ever get consistent results marking steel directly with the laser. I can do that with my machine as well but it is so slow that I view it as not worthwhile.
