since the main part has shown up, and in one piece!237573237574237575Just need to scrounge a frog of the correct type, make the handles ( Black Walnut ones) and add the iron and such. 14" long, by 2-3/8" wide. Base for the tote will be easy to fit a tote to. Well it is a start, anyway...:D

Remember that little Parts Plane? It may just provide most of the parts for this project. Question....high knob, or low knob? Since all the parts, but the iron ( Buck Brothers) and the handles ( by me) will be from Stanley/ Victor, maybe I'll have a Stanley/Victor #5 Leave the frog RED, or paint it black? Questions, questions. Still have a pattern for a #5 sized tote, and the lathe still works, just need some shoptime to make things....

Question....high knob, or low knob?

I tend to like short knobs. I do have a few planes with tall knobs and they work fine.

I can not tell from the images if there is a ring around the base for the knob. Those are for tall knobs, but if you turn your own, then it could be what ever you want.

My only issue with a short knob tends to be with my #4-1/2. The toe is short enough that the hairs on my hand can get caught under the plane at times. That is a bit uncomfortable until all the hairs get pulled out.

Just a "mock up" of what this Stanley / Victor #5 might look like...237667237668 No ring for a high knob, though. Black tote is a "stand-in" until I can get out to make the real ones.

Just a test drive in some Pine. 237704237705237706Doesn't seem too bad. The depth adjuster hole is really tight, to remove the iron, one has to tap it a couple times to free it up. Unlike this next plane..237707237708237709 Shaving are a might thick yet. Adjuster on this Union #4G is very sloppy, might swap chip breakers with the #5. That tote is from the parts Plane, sine the Union one's cracked again. Just having some fun....

Going out to set up my sharpening station on the Back Porch Bench. Nothing fancy, just an area that I had planed smooth and flat. I can clamp some sandpaper to it, and away we go..237906I flatten the backs, and shine up the edges237909237910237911 and then, using one of the clamps, and a piece of pine 2x2, I give them a test drive. 237912Buck Brothers 14" jack, with a Stanley 2" iron,237913Franken Plane #5 jack plane, with a Buck Bros 2" iron on-board, and I finally got some decent shavings out of a Union Mfg Co. #4G...237914 We be getting there...
