This bowl comes from a Doug. Fir burl which is quite rare. It's history is even more rare. In 1909 a railroad bridge was built over a river in Wash. state. This burl was buried along with tons of rock at one end of the bridge. In 2009 the bridge was replaced with a new one. The burl was rescued and I ended up with it. It had been buried and under water for 100 years. The wood had turned nearly black. It was ball shaped and about 20 inches in dia. It was full of pitch and some rot. some of the pitch was still liquid. I was only able to get 2 bowls with a little left over for a couple of small pieces. While I was turning, the smell of pitch was very strong. The wood is very hard and it turned quite well.

This bowl will go to the man who gave me the burl. It's about 8 inches in dia. C and C welcome.

What a great story, and you did that piece of wood justice. +++++ Five Stars or more.

Exceptional, both in natures treatment of the wood and your skill at bringing it out to share with us. Thanks Wally, as well, for the story behind the wood.
