We are going to reshingle a roof on a building at our church. I was always taught that wood shingles had to be laid on stripping so the underside would "breathe" and dry out after rains. Some think you can remove old shingles, put decking over rafters, using felt paper over that and then lay new wood shingles.

What do the experts think?

When you install wood shingles over plywood you have to use a special breathable membrane that lays on top of the plywood.
This allows air to circulate under the shingle and allows the wood to dry out.
It's expensive, but worth every penny.

What Keven says is true. Shingling over old shingles your asking for trouble...Especially for the next roofer that does the job...You can strip the roof & plywood if the span is 16 to 20"it depends what the spacing is, then use the cedar breather mesh for a small air space to help the shingles to dry out.

Shingle roofing will last three times as long in this climate if done the way that you have discribed, so in my opinion you are correct.
