I think that's a Peregrine Falcon.

Looks like a white tail hawk to me. It could be red tail and you would know for sure if seen from behind. Often the red tail feathers will show a little from the front when not in flight or fanned out.

Possibly a broad-wing hawk -- best match found in my wife's bird book.

"A stocky pigeon-sized hawk. Adult: plain brown above, barred with rusty color below with broad black and white tail bands. Immature similar but sparsely spotted or splotched below and with tail bands less distinct."

(Field Guide to Birds; Eastern Region -- National Audobon Society).

Cheers,

Chris

I believe it is a red-shouldered hawk.

Did you hear its cry? We have coopers hawks in our yard often and they sound like a higher pitched eagle's cry.

It could also be a young hawk, which is making the markings less obvious.

We get Coopers hawks too. That isn't one of them. The breast isn't white enough. Different speckling.

Definitely an Accipiter, not a Buteo, but which species I don't know. Need more visual clues.

I don't think the bird is into glamor shots.....It's not there anymore. I have seen it before a few days ago. A neighbor has baby chickens & he thinks the hawk is killing them as they're disappearing....We have other birds that have nests with babies so maybe he's looking to eat....

We have one (believe it or not in Texas) that looks identical. We decided (from my wife's birdbook it is a red shouldered one. Must have the same book as Paul Saffold.

sorry about this but I had to go to the pros for this...

That’s an adult Broad-winged Hawk in your photo. You can learn more about it at www.allaboutbirds.org.

Broad-winged. Looks just like the photo in my Audubon Field Guide.
