This is my first "sculptural" negative space design. In the past my pieces have been in the range of .300-.375 inches thick. This one has raised sculpted volutes and measures just shy of 1/2 inch and most of that is the volute height. I am modestly pleased with my first attempt. As I was making this I had a real desire to sandblast it..luckily, I have no compressor, nor sandblast unit!! Shedua, about 8 inches in diameter. Let me know what you think of this change of concept in these pieces. Thanks:)

It looks like you did an excellent job of carving and spacing the raised volutes. The photo took me a little while to figure out, but understanding it now, I am very impressed. That must have taken you many hours of work in carving and sanding. What kind of carving tools do you use? Do you have a side view? I would love to see this up close. Great Job!

I like it! I think the raised volutes add yet another visual dimension for the eyes to take in! Really like the sense of motion that your negative space designs create! Nice work!

Wow. That's a lot of Dremel work. Have been impressed with everything you post and this is no exception. Keep me coming.

This one will not stop moving! Simple and direct but very effective. Do I detect a slight "Paul Hedman thing" going on here?

I like it, the raised volutes have added a lot of depth, it's almost vortex like, constantly moving and drawing your eyes to the center (which is perfectly shaped IMHO)

Hi David: yes, over on WOW i said that I think this change was predicated by seeing too much of P.H. works! It's like getting a song stuck in your head!

Wonderful piece again Michelle. I think about Paul's work and wish I had room for a sandblast cabinet...and then I start thinking again, and am grateful I DON'T have room for a sandblast cabinet! Would be interesting to try some of the techniques Paul employs, as well those of Pascal Oudet. Saw him do a demo on his dentilles, very cool.
Sandblasting may open a new direction on your negative space work...can't hurt to try.

Very Very nice. I really like the carved approach. Much more depth. I think some blasting would also add to it. Well done.

Very neat Michele! A brass bristle or soft steel brush can give the appearance of sandblasting.
