I needed to make my DIL a bowl to replace one she broke. The bowl sat in a ring of deer antlers sort of like a table centerpiece.
I elected to make a segmented/layered bowl using walnut/cedar/cherry/white oak.
One of my best tool purchases has been my Smart Miter sled (http://www.oldrebelworkshop.com/smartmiter.htm) which needed some more testing. I made 4 different octagon layers using the Smart Miter to cut the segmented pieces.
I simply cut 8 pieces the same length mitered at 22° for each of the 4 segmented layers. Without ANY trimming, sanding, tweaking, etc on the pieces, I simply applied Titebond glue, wrapped a band clamp around them and set aside to dry.
As with my previous experiences with the Smart Miter, the rings came out PERFECT:. I ran each segmented layer through my newly aquired 10-20 drum sander to insure flatness.

Red Cedar layer:

I then cut 2 solid layers for the top and bottom of the bowl. One from cherry (bowl bottom) and 1 from white oak (bowl top).
Top 3 layers glued up:

Remaing layers added to the glue-up:

Now the simple chore of mountiing the blank on the 1642VS and turning the finished product :) . Hopefully I can get around to that in a day or two.
Stay tuned for Chapter 2 :D
