View Full Version : Amazingly simple homemade bevel grinding jig!

Earlier I posted a thread asking about grinders for establishing bevels. Well that thread lead to a fellow creeker here to contact me via private message with a short video he had made demonstrating a simple sharpening jig he had made that has helped him with establishing bevels on his chisels and plane blades. I must say I was mighty impressed at it's simplicity and apparent ease of use, and I thought since Don was kind enough to pass it on to me, I should spread the info onto others...

Check it out! I hope you all will have the same "Ahhaaaa!" moment I did!

Wow. Simple, yet effective. Might have saved me a $100 if I saw this video last month.

Bob - one extra tip that might benefit folks new to this sort of technique, and that might be leary of testing the blade contact point with the grinder running:

You can test the blade contact point on the wheel when setting up without actually having the grinder on - simply set your stop (the Eclipse jig in Bob's video), rest the bevel of the blade on the wheel with the grinder off, and stroke the blade back and forth on the wheel. The abrasive in the wheel will mark the bevel by removing the sharpie ink as in Bob's video which gives one a guide to re-set the stop if necessary. Doing this with the grinder off also allows one to determine whether the blade is making contact in the center or on either side, which allows one to adjust the bar jig to square the bevel of the blade. Alternatively, if one's used a square to make the bar precisely parallel with the grinder's shaft, the ink trick helps to allow one to dress the grinder wheel evenly with a slight crown in the center.

The picture and link to the video aren't showing up for me either, on Win7 running not-quite-fully-updated Chrome.
Anyway, browsing the source for this page, the link to the video is: www.facebook.com/v/10151896906640693 (http://www.facebook.com/v/10151896906640693)

I get a white blank space. John's link takes me to what appears to be an unrelated FB page.

+1 Same for me. Just a blank white space. Maybe a moderator will be able to retrieve it from the archives??
