My lawyer asked me to shorten his wooden walking stick and to make a 2 inch walnut ball for the top of it. I don't have a lathe. I asked a someone to turn one but getting a perfect round ball is challenging. I found sources for wooden balls but they were made from maple or birch.

Can anyone point me to a source for a 2" walnut ball?

Thanks,

--Jesse

p.s. my lawyer is a perfectionist (desirable in an attorney) and when he says 2 inches he means 2 inches.

I don't know where you can find a 2" walnut ball, but someone posted a link recently for 2 foot walnut balls :-)

With a little resourcefullness, something that small could easily be turned on a drill.

How resourceful do you feel? Here is a link for a radius cutting fixture for a Sherline metal lathe.

If you are cutting wood, I see no reason why you can't drill a chunk of walnut for a dowel rod and chuck it up in your drill press.l You could make one of these fixtures out of plywood for a one time deal. Once you get the sphere cut, if you sand carefully, you won't mess up the shape.

I'm pretty sure you can buy walnut finials on line that can be modified for your purpose. There are some nice carved things out there if you are willing to go a little on the radical side :).

Here is one at 1-1/2" http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-1-2-DIAMETER-WALNUT-WOOD-BALL-LAMP-HARP-FINIALS-/120484713908?_trksid=p4069.m2059&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3 D1%26asc%3D27%26meid%3D429724832235034202%26pid%3D 100039%26prg%3D1011%26rk%3D1%26#ht_500wt_1167

Here is one in a walnut finish http://thecurtainrodshop.com/product/7278/Belle-of-the-Ball-Finial-Walnut-2Each.aspx

and here is a 2-1/8" solid walnut ball http://www.etsy.com/listing/89249242/wood-ball-walnut-turned-ball?ref=sr_gallery_6&ga_includes%5B%5D=materials&ga_search_query=wood+balls&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery Just a few options?
