router bit problem

has anyone had any luck grinding the female threads off of a panel raising router bit so that it can "plunge deeper into a panel?

I ground the bearing post off a chamfer bit once and it worked good. Was trying to copy Kregs beaded FF bits. For RP I would just buy a simulated raised panel bit of the same profile or use a shaper cutter - if those are options for you.
