This is my latest negative space design. To say that this was demanding and that I confused myself over & over would be an understatement. This piece has directional changes in the volutes on 2 levels.

Sapele and copper. about 10 diam

hope you enjoy & your eyeballs stay in your heads!!:D

I'm confused just looking at it!! But I'm not confused about the cool factor being off the scale!! How did you like working with Sapele? The stuff I've used in the past was very perfumey.

I too enjoy these pieces and the thought that must go into doing them. It has a bit of a 'spider' look, but not so much as the one that was aptly named.
Wonderful work!

Michelle,
I agree. That's a winner. Very interesting, creative design. I see how you would get a bit confused.

Took a lot of creativity and imagination to bring that to life, Michelle........I like the L shaped features.......they make the curves into the center really special..........geez.......the hits just keep on coming with you Michelle!

Wow. What a marvel. We need to see more photos.

Dell: why do you need to see more photos? the back looks just like the front and the sides are less than 1/2 inch thick. Not much to see!!! Is there a dimension I'm missing?? LOL :-) :-) It must be a new dimension in the twilight zone!! LOL

Beautiful work. I can't even begin to imagine the work that went into this. I think I will stick to burning leaves. ;)

Neat work Michele! My first thought before I enlarged it was that it appeared woven. (now thats a possibility for you to figure out next:)) Actually I don't find this personally as dizzying as some of the designs you have come up with!:)

That is just too cool! I admire your ability come up with a concept and see it through to a finished piece like this one. All of your negative space works are awesome, keep them coming.

Michelle, this is one cool looking bit of work, I would like to see a pic of it sitting flat on a surface so that I can see the side profile. Is this the one that you have posted as your profile pic, or is that another one? Thanks for giving all of us a look at this beauty, it is kinda mesmirizing.

Len: no the one in my profile is entitled: Escargots go A'courtin Hope you like this too.

It would be silly to see it on it's side as it is less than 1/2 inch thick

Very cool, MIchelle. Some day I want to try to understand your process, but for now I just like to look at them.

Doug H. Someday, I'd like to understand my process too! I confuse myself greatly, and I have spent 2 yrs working on it. Each piece requires new thought and new methods. If I figure it all out before I die, I will pass it on! I did 2 tutorials here at sawmill about pieces much like this. (I have no idea how to go back & get them, but searching might come up with them)

Amazing and congratulations, Michelle.
Many years ago, I went to a cabinet shop to have some boards thicknessed. One of the guys was running wide boards across a dado head at an angle. He then flipped it over and did the same from the opposite angle. Formed a grill type pattern.
Unless I am completely wrong you have take this many steps further, reversing the cut in midstream, and doing it on a curve. I never did master the dado thing, so my head is really hurting looking at yours.

Again, congratulations.
