Almost done, just a finish on a new tote is needed. 236072 Sitting out on the porch, giving the Cherry tote a sun burn. Tote was for a Stanley style base, this KK was a Union style base. Holes were a little "off" Did a bit of carving to make the real hole match the metal base's boss location. Also use a drill and bit to "oval" the bolt hole. After a few dry fits, finally got the tote to fit right. Instead of the narrow Stanley iron ( on a KK?) it has a DE blade. Both the DE and the KK were sold by the same company. The DE that was the "donor" also had almost the same Union style frog. The only difference was in the adjuster wheels. KK7 was RIGHT handed, the DE6 was LEFT handed threads.:eek:A "before" shot:236073 Broken tote, rusty base, and all. Lever cap even had a few chips in it. Cleaned and polished things up236074and put things back together236075still need to sharpen the irons, and mate the chip breakers ( yes, there are TWO each available) And this "Bobtailed" KK7 will be back to work. Until then236076think I need a sunscreen???:cool:

Have since added a oil finish to the tote. Now, IF I can find some shop time to go out and sharpen a few irons......

Nice restoration.

Likely to have another century of work ahead.

I'd say no on the sunscreen - a coat of oil type finish and a little sun can really help speed that beautiful coloration that cherry develops.

Took the Keen Kutter #7 out for a test drive today. Had some Tulip Poplar clamped up on the Back Porch Bench. First a trip down the face grain..236509then I cut a bevel on one edge..236510236511and a look at that sun-burned tote. Finally clamped the board edge up, for a little "Jointing work"236512Ah, Moxxon TP! Two swipes, two curls. Still have to finish the sharpening on that old iron...

While doing the test drive, noticed the tote was losse. Seems the tote is a Stanley style, and the base is a Union style. Wasn't happy with the knob either, had a crack in it's side. The tote went on the Franckein plane #6c, fit perfectly. The knob...kept it as a pattern. So, I was left with a "bob-tailed" KK7 without a tote, or a knob. I did have some black Walnut out in the woodshop......237187This is one of two knobs I turned, as I always turn a spare. The spare found a home on a Union #3 I have. Next, how to make a Union style tote, when all I have are Stanley patterns? I had a Union 5A in the shop, so, a trace here, a trace there, and mark out where the bolts go through the tote. Bandsaw the blank out, run a round-over bit around, repair a chip out, and try to sand away all those burn marks. At least it fits...237188 so here is the whole picture237189 a little dusty, since I was also using the plane in the shop today. Jointing boards for a glue-up, planing the top flat with the KK7, smoothing out the tapers on a few legs. Hey, it is a user, right?

KK7 is now completed, and ready for work.237262237263The "Stanley tote is on my #6c project237264Both are making good shavings. The KK7 sports a Stanley Sweetheart iron, the #6c has a Berg on board. I have them both "parked with the rest of the "Biggums"237265That is a #6c, a #6 Bailey, a KK7, and a Bailey #8c. I think I now have the bigger bench planes about covered....

What, no #5-1/2 or #4-1/2. Those are in my realm of the bigger bench planes even though the #4-1/2 is a smoother.

Working on that, right now i have a #5 to rebuild. There are a couple 4-1/2s on the bay right now. One is a "basket case", but refurbishable. the usual rust bucket sort of thing. There is a 5-1/4 as well, and cheap too! I just have this project to get done first. There will be others showing up, sometimes they show up more than once....

Union #5A...237269But I leave it sitting over with the other two jack planes. 237270Them fives seem to stick together....

Isn't the Union 5A the same size as the earlier Bailey 5 1/2? Is the blade width 2 1/4"

It is the same as a Bailey #5-1/2. I think the iron is 2-1/4", since it was made about the same time as the narrower #5-1/2 planes. Stamp on it's Iron read UNION MFG Co. Newbritain CT. The #5 with thechewed off tote is a Fulton #5.
