I'm stumped. I'm looking for an 1 1/4" safety lock washer for a shaper spindle with two key ways , for running reverse rotation. I suppose a washer with a single notch would be fine too, but I can't seems to find any one that sells them. Getting one from the OEM may not be possible. didn't think it would be hard to locate one, guess I never looked. Anyone know of a source for one?

Peter,

If you can find a single tab version I'd think that would work -- locking in one direction, the nut self-locking in the other, right? -- but you could also use a second nut on top of the first, locking it into place (if there's enough thread left with whatever setup you're using.)

Maybe I misunderstand the issue, though.

When I needed one that was unobtainable for a reasonable price, I drilled and tapped a 1/4" spacer and used a set screw with loctite.

If I am not mistaken I think you are looking for a tab washer. Here is a link that might help. http://seastrom-mfg.com/washercategories.aspx?pl=Tab+Washers

Great ideas, thanks guys. Mike's idea of a delta part made me think, I have a powermatic parts account, I found a washer from a PM29 in stock, $6.75, ordered that one. It had not occurred to me to look at other manufacturers, I was looking after market or speciality hardware. JR, I like that idea so much I think I'm going to do that too. This shaper has a smooth spindle with a nut at the top, two long key ways at the top, you have to stack spacers almost all the way up to the nut to lock it down, so a spacer with set screws at the top would work perfect. It has a breaking motor, and while its not a super fast stop, I prefer the cheap insurance of a lock washer on there. And I may occasionally run it reverse rotation.

FWIW I'd put off drilling the spacer until you need to. Your spindle design is pretty standard, as such you need a good variety of spacers on hand for making up the space between smaller cutters and the nut. I always prefer to use the spacers that come with the shaper as I feel they're generally the best quality and fit. Using one for a washer takes one away from your stack that you may need one day:eek:

Now if you pick up an extra spacer or two maybe drill the extra, but probably easier to just buy a washer from Powermatic;)

good luck,

Actually it came with no spacers, so I'll be buying a set, probably freeborn or Amana. Until then I'll be poaching from my other other shaper, though I'm not sure I actually have enough spacers to stack both spindles simultaneously.
