I have to presume they are using it to cut poles, dowels, stakes, etc.

It's for the July 4th party at Ice Station Zebra.

Or the ice or snow itself, if they are taking samples or building a shelter. A saw is handy to cut blocks for an igloo, for instance.

The shadow is there behind the snow pile.
Look closer.

I do not see a shadow behind the saw, any shadow would be behind the saw and on the right side of the saw

Ever go swimming in the Winter, Ray? Try that lake.
Why are you having such a hard time believing there is such a thing as an ice saw?

I have an ice saw from the turn of the century when they cut ice out of the local lake for the ice house. Its five feet long, looks like a one man saw but the teeth are cut different.

They tried a two man version, but the bottom guy kept drowning.......

Yep - nothing ever turns out well when you deal with an ice hole..
