a little piece of tiger maple. Just trying out a thinnish stem, and to turn a ball shape by eye. No usefull purpose.
2 1/2" x 7" tall.

my first thought was Jupiter on a stick. Nice job with the sphere.

Way cool. So many people posting their "practice pieces" and they more often than not look better than something I've planned out. Guess I need to practice more often:D. Really nice piece of maple too, the curl is beautiful.

Deane, this reminds me of one of those pictures of an "imposibility"...like the stairs that keep going up. It looks like a chalice that CANNOT be filled. I like it!

Dean, it looks like you nailed it. So now, when are you gonna stop practicing and get serious???? Jerry (in Tucson)

Now that is pretty cool Deane! Nice job on the sphere and the curl gives it an otherworldly look.

Cool orb! It does have a planet like look about it. I think it's good to practice outside the norm to help get ideas flowing or to just work on techniques.
