No, I'm not getting ahead of myself (-: still on the jonter. a friend of mine who is an instrument maker wants to make one (like in david finks book with a 95 degree cutting action) so I said I'd ask for him which type of blade and there pros/cons.

can carbon steel hold a burr for a long time?

can you even turn a burr on HSS?

What would YOU use ? (-:

Thank you.

Carbon steel with a hard saw temper (like low 50s hardness) or A2 with a similar temper. It needs to be soft enough that you can turn a burr on it, but hard enough to hold the burr.

A2 in a scraper plane will last a lot longer, but you won't find it hardened to that temper many places.

I don't know... but here is A2 at 48-51HRC (-: http://www.leevalley.com/US/wood/page.aspx?p=48431&cat=1,41182,68491

Right, it can be turned on plane irons and chisels as long as you're not rough, but you have to have something that can actually turn the burr, and that is polished. I think on a blade that hard, you'd only want to use carbide.

Yes, that's about saw temper. It makes for a nice scraper blade at that hardness, holds on for a long time but is still easy to roll a burr on it.

is the purpose of turning a burr on a plane blade to allow it to be used in a scraper plane? that would make sense to me. if not that, whatever for would one intentionally roll the edge of a plane blade?

yeah, for a scraper plane, blade bedded at 95 degrees or so.

ok. just my impression- plane blades are a bit hard for this. I wouldn't want to have to work so hard at preparing the edge. when you're running a scraper hard you need to return to the sharpening station pretty frequently, and I'd rather have an edge I can roll the burr on several times before going to the stones, even if it means that I'm doing it a few minutes sooner than with a harder blade which would require going straight to the stones each time.

I bought a stanley 80 with no blade and made one from a dead not-carbide-tipped circular saw blade. it's a bit heavier than the stock blade, which is fine to a point. works well for me.

really, a too hard scraper blade is a pain in the butt.
