I spent a few days at a rustic country inn (The Swag) outside Waynesville, NC two weeks ago and saw this table sitting in the dog trot. (For those not familiar with Appalachia, imagine a six room building, 3 on the first floor in a row and three on a second floor. Then remove the middle room on the first floor. The open space left is the dog trot.)
I asked the owner about it. She said it was old growth poplar. She passed the truck with a giant log on it driving down the road one day, did a U-turn, and followed the truck all the way to the sawmill. Bought the log on the spot and had them saw it up for her. Then called her husband!
Its 18 feet long or so, 2 feet wide, and 3 inches thick.
