My nephew and his lovely wife asked me if I would make a flag display case for her grandfather's flag. I feel very honored by their request.
I have also wanted to build a case for my brother's burial flag but never found or came up with a nice design that did not look generic.

Now I need a special or at least a nice design for both of these cases.
I don't know yet if the grandpa has any metals of ribbons to display. I do know my brother has a few and I would like to display them also.

If you have any ideas I will be very happy to about them.

Also if you have any does or don't about flag display cases I would like to hear them also.

Some site on the internet say to seal the case and others say you don't need to.

Thank you,
Dale

The latest issue of Woodsmith magazine has an article on building a flag case that might be a good place to start:
http://www.woodsmith.com/magazine/sources/201/flag-case/

You might also want to do a Google/Bing image search.

Take a look at http://www.gettysburgflag.com/memcase.php. They also indicate the internal dimensions of the cases, which might be helpful to you.

You might want to try something like this (http://www.thomasjmacdonald.com/content/behind-the-scenes/season-01-behind-the-scenes/season-01-ep-05/) one Tommy Mac built on Rough Cut.

When I was making shadow boxes for guys retiring, the outside dimensions were 18"wide x 24"tall. That size box held the flag and then had room for medals/ribbins badges. The depth was determined by the material the flag was made out of; cotton required a thicker box than a nylon flag.

If it was an internement shadow box, the dimensions were more like 24"wide x 24" tall or taller depending on different factors.

I will have to check to see if I have any old dimensioned drawings anywhere.

If you want, I can post some photos of examples.
