This just opened up between 3 and 6 pm. came out of the shop and there it was. about 18" across over a foot deep and who knows how far under it goes. I think the heat today softened the asphalt and that was the last straw. of the first hot days we have hand.

I was going to make a wise crack about how the corny movie, Volcano in New York started out with something similar...
Then I noticed you're not too far from Mt. St. Helens!

Scratch that one eh?

Then I also remembered hell house has an asphalt drive - and - how everything we've been doing to rehab that has been a nightmare of one step forward, three steps back..

Scratch that one too eh?

Did you figure out what's underneath that may have caused it?

we had a smaller one about 15' away that was slow to form they fixed it and the ground around it. it is making me wonder if it is from the light rail tracks they put in at the other end of the block. about 100 feet away.

Most likely a meteorite did it.

do the people that fix these holes work at night when the temperature downs ?

I doubt it. that costs extra. someone marked the hole by the time I got here so that's not too bad.

Pfft. Obviously a particle beam strike from visiting alien civilization.

Meteorites and lasers leave burned edges.

Looks like the start of a sink hole.

Sink holes have been on the Portland New Channels for the last two weeks, comes with all the rain we have had this year. Just don't park your car within 50 feet it. May not be there, in the morning. ; ) Tom

Better to find on the driveway instead of the highway. Have seen as bad recently here in Knoxville, in line with the driving lane, and actually quite close to the UT Hospital....where they are waiting to offer medical treatment. Those have been filled now (were maybe 5 ft in length and half a foot wide...just waiting on a wheel to drop in.)

May be caused by subterranean water eroding the earth from below. Get you a flag pole and stick it in and you are ready for Independance day.
