I don't have any oil stones. Can a diamond coated plate be used? Any other options?

I use an old coarse honing stone. It puts a bevel on the blade faster.

Any old cheap honing stone will do.

Short answer yes, the coarser it is the quicker it works.

This is an interesting subject in that the folks at Lenox swear it doesn't need to be done since the edges are now rounded in the production process to prevent fatigue, in other words something we once had to to but now do not. I still have my standard $10 "bandsaw" stone with its wooden handle and magnet stuck to one of my saws, I still use it because it is quick and easy and just part of my normal routine.

I would NEVER get diamonds near my machines. Any dust that gets into them is permanent.

I also never stone the backs of bandsaw blades. It isn't necessary, and at the worst introduces abrasive dust into the machine.

A little bit of over reacting, George?
Minute specs of dust aren't going to hurt anything.
Besides, you get dirt in a tool just from the wood you cut.
