Here's the latest project I've been working on.
Small buffet that will go in our kitchen. 34"X 34", 16" deep

235183

The hutch that will sit on this is just getting started.
QSWO stained with the color American Walnut. Drawers are just false fronts right now and will be done with the two that the hutch will have.

Gary, I haven't been on in over a year. Got on tonight and all I could think about was finding some projects from a couple of my favorite woodworkers on here and I have to say you did not disappoint me with this! Awesome job as usual. Beautiful piece.

Thanks Joe..
A little update as we have been slowly moving forward on this hutch.
My back frame is done and now for some 3/8" T&G white oak to fill it.

237239

The guts are done, as is the shelve and top.

237240

Won't be long and we will get to do a few hand cut drawers.. A little staining and then glue this thing all together.

Very nice Gary. Is this your own design?

gary Zimmel

Thanks Paul, and yes I stole a few ideas from some other buffet and hutches and threw them all into one.
With the approval of my wife...;)

With my T&G machined for the back I get to do a final test fit of everything before this gets knocked down for some staining.
3/8" thick T&G that is 1 5/8" wide.

237345

237346

The plan is starting to come together......

With the last of the trim on I was able to get the last of the staining on the carcass done.
Not a lot to say but with the trim and stain she sure looks different.

238664

The shadow on this one is just the way the light is coming through my shop door.
The back is 3/8" T&G that sits in a frame.

238665

To add a little detail the front stretcher sits 1/4" back from the face trim.

238666

238667

Next on my agenda will be to make the two doors.
I was considering having a glass panel with a leaded design made for me.
However I don't want to wait 4-5 weeks to have them made or pay the 200 bucks a panel.http://forum.canadianwoodworking.com/images/smilies/1eek.gif
So we will do the doors with mutton bars that will give us six small glass panels on each door.
I'm thinking it will still add some interest and a little elegance to the piece.
That being said I may have to now drill new holes for the shelve to make sure it lines up with the mutton bars.

My last few shop sessions were making the two doors for the hutch.
I originally planned on have two leaded glass panels made but have opted to do six small panes with mutton bars.

With the parts for the bars made I lay them on top of the door to get my mortises for bars.

239440

A quick trip to the router table and I have my rabbits for the glass panes.

239441

And my completed doors.
Corners are pinned with 3/8" dowels.
The shelf is the same height as the top bar and is hidden so it will not detract from our look.

239442

All that is left to do now are the four drawers.
Hope everyone is getting a little shop time..

Happy day in my shop....

After 3 1/2 months I finally get a peek at how this buffet and hutch look like together.
There were a couple of bumps in the road but all in all I'm really happy how it has turned out...
The boss gave it a final thumbs up.http://forum.canadianwoodworking.com/images/smilies/1thumb.gif And when it comes down to it, thats all that matters.
Happy wives, happy lives.
All QSWO. Just a simple staining so far.
Hand cut 1/2 blinds. QSWO is not my favorite wood to work with doing hand cut dovetails.
But in saying that these ones sure turned out purdy.....

240532

240534

240531

240533

All thats left to do is the sprayed topcoat and install the glass.
But for all intense and purposed this one is done...

Now to figure out what project is next on the agenda...
I'm wanting to do a Gus Stickley Eastwood Chair but I think the boss has different ideas..
Something about a larger buffet and hutch to go with her dining room table.

Till next time.http://forum.canadianwoodworking.com/images/smilies/smile1.gif

Very nice piece of work. The design is really unique I think. Well done! What are the dimensions ?

gary Zimmel

Thanks for all the comments.

The buffet is 34"X 34" X16' deep. Hutch is 34"X43"X 13" deep. It was my own design with a lot of input from my wife. This was made to replace a metal bakers rack in the kitchen so the boss wanted a certain width, height, and depth to fit her kitchen.
My QSWO comes from Channin hardwoods here in Edmonton. It's real pricey compared to what others pay in other parts of the country and in the states but one can't dispute the quality...

I can't wait to see the completed piece. This is a really awesome design and the choice of material is impressive.
