I had the chance to do some more burning today. I still have about 10 hours of burning to do. I hope to have the burn finished this weekend. The size of the burned image is around 10" diameter.

Update 6/22/12: I finished the burn today and added some color. I used acrylic pencils for the color to simulate the cracks that have developed in the original painting. I applied 2 coats of Mohawk lacquer. I may adjust the color a little once I sand the finish, but will wait until the leaf and patina are applied to see how the work together. They are a little off in the picture, due to the fact that I took it with my phone.

Are you going to do patination on the rim? It sure looks like it's set for it.

Thanks guys.

Bob, the rim will be gilded with Silver leaf and a Potash patina. The patina will have blues, oranges, reds and greens in it. The patina will compliment the colors of the original painting. I have not decided if I will color the burning yet. I also have to decide if I am going to burn the entire plate or leave the maple as is prior to the gilding. If I burn the rest of the plate it will be a very dark brown and I need to see how it will look with the leaf work.

Jeff the work you do is very impressive and I love your subject matter.
Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting has been remixed into 140 perfectly spaced dots. You know, for the Twitter generation.

Thanks everyone.

Rich, that re-mix is pretty cool. I should have used that, I would have been done last week ;)

Thanks Steve. I am really pleased with the progress. I have changed my vision for this plate a couple of times. I was originally going to burn the rim and back of the plate, but it has some nice fiddle, so I decided to leave it natural. I try not to burn plates with a lot of figure, but I think a little figure adds to the finished piece. After looking at the plate tonight, I think I have a little distortion in the picture and that is why the face looks plump.

I still have the tenon on the back. If I don't like it, I can start over. ;)

Wow! That is just amazing! Definitely a piece to be extremely proud of and it's not even done yet. I look forward to seeing it with the leaf and patina!

 I can't even begin to image the time you have invested in this piece, to even think of starting over, you must be a glutton for punishment!

I have about 20 hours invested and about 8 hours left. Baring anything catastrophic, the image will stay. I would like to get one or 2 more pieces done for Turn-On Chicago and I am running out of time :)
