This block was given to me by a neighbor and he just called it ash. It didn't have the light coloring of ash that I have turned before so after a little research I am calling it black ash, also known as swamp ash and basket ash. If you think I am wrong let me know, I won't cry. It is about 13.5 x 5.5 and finished with Minwax Antique Oil.

nice n.e. bowl...black ash is a northern tier wood..grows in swamps & wet areas. it is grey/black vs. the color i see here.

That is a good looking bowl, Fred...........nice job on it! Pretty grain in the wood...........I am kind of fond of ash.........I like the grain figure against the solid hardwood.......makes for a pretty project!

Sorry, can't tell you what kind of ash it is, it is darker than the ash I've turned. What I can tell you is that it is a great looking NE Bowl! I like the form and the finish.

Nice ash, Fred. I like NE bowls, but the color in this one is eye catching.

That is well done, Fred. Care to share your technique for applying AO? How many coats, etc?

Eric Antique Oil is probably my favorite finish for bowls. I sand to 600 and apply the first coat very liberally soaking the wood and rubbing it in and then wiping it off while it is still wet. Leaves a surface that isn't sticky. Second coat I do the same but the third coat I apply with a folded paper towel very light and in the direction of the grain and don't wipe down. I give the final coat a few days before I buff. Works pretty good for me, just make sure you don't miss any spots on the last round. DAMHIKT

Thanks everyone for the nice comments.
