i just got hired at a local finishing shop, high end finishing, doors tables, everything. we were working with a custom ordered stain today, very dark. i have no idea what it was, but i put on three layers of nitrile gloves,,, it ate through them in about 30 minutes. what kind of gloves should be bought to fix this?

You can't really recommend a glove unless the solvent[s] in the material are known. But for unknown rubber would be better than nitrile to at least try, if and when the nitrile is not working. Even then, it will swell up in time also, so have more than one pair available to switch ok? Also i recommend you find out what the solvents in the stain are so you can get ones meant for those solvents if possible.

+1 on what Sheldon said. Also, check compatibility charts and you might have a means to determine potential solvent based on your observations. A good starting place on glove safety is here (http://www.ehs.ufl.edu/Lab/CHP/gloves.htm) (1st hit from google search for "solvent gloves compatibility (http://www.google.com/search?q=solvent+gloves+compatibility)").

Good luck with the new job!

Agree completely with Sheldon here and will go one step further by saying you should always know what the solvent is for any finish you are working with - if you don't you can't be sure you are appropriately protected and using sound safety practices.

I am somewhat surprised to hear that your employer doesn't furnish you with the safety gear that you need in order to do your job!
