At the local flea market this plane was $5 and all I could tell about it was it was complete and nothing broken. It is a Stanley 5 1/2C and I think a type 13? Here are a few photos to show what I am starting with. I hope I can get it cleaned up in the next few days.

Looks like ya got your work cut out for ya.
How are you goin' to de-rust?
One thing's for sure. The price was right.

That sucks that I didn't find it first?

Looks like you may need a replacement blade if it is as rusty as the rest of the plane. Check to make sure if it is 2-1/4" or if it is the later 2-3/8" blade.

I know not everyone agrees with using chemical rust removers, but to me, that looks like a job for Evaporust.

You are off to a good start. All the screws came out. If there are no cracks, and look closely at he corners of the mouth, or chips it should make a good user. I agree with Michael about the Evaporust. Scrape the bulk of the rust off, degrease, and soak it for a few days. Have fun with it.

First the plane has the 2 1/4" blade. There ar NO cracks or chips.

Now... I decided to clean the plane by hand and elbow grease. It took about 1 1/5 hours to clean it to where I am happy whith the way it looks. I hand sanded everything down and repainted the black with enamel. Amazingly all the nasty looking rust and dirt were only on the surface and there was no pitting. Here's what my $5 plane looks like after 1 1/2 hours of work.

Nice job! Where are you getting the commercial-grade elbow grease? I'm not as thrilled with what I've had lately. :P

Very pretty....but can it make a 2 thou shaving?... Hoot!

I think this sentiment is based upon a movie I saw once where a general was inspecting foreign troops and said they were pretty but could they fight. Might have been Patton. He was such a sensitive fellow...hoot!

Nice plane and a great job !

Qualifies for several gloat awards for sure.

That may take the cake for best $5 spent so far this year.

It cleaned up very nicely. Good work, although you did lose quite a bit of character. LOL

Terry:
Think that was Donald Sutherland impersonating a general in
The Dirty Dozen

I think it was the Dirty Dozen. Donald Sutherland reviewing Robert ryans paratroopers. I'd have passed that plane up....big mistake. Nice Job.
