Here's another small hollowform I've recently completed. The form itself is cherry, and the lid is black palm. It's 4" in diameter by 5 3/4" overall height. Walls are about 3/16" thick. The lid was turned to overall shape, then final shaping took place on the bandsaw with a touch of handcarving. The finish is Watco Natural DO, two coats with second coat wetsanded, followed by lacquer, buffed and waxed. Only name that comes to mind is, The Apple. Enjoy...

It's a happy apple. Something about it is uplifting. Maybe because you left a tiny base that completely exposes the round bottom or maybe because the srem of the finial is tall. In any event, it's cute.

I really like the black palm top. Did you have any problems with it? I have heard it is a pain to work with.

Jeff, it wasn't a problem, it turns really nice and sands out great. A really good turner over in these parts told me to turn it with really sharp tools and really fast RPM. I did notice that you need to use a skew or similar to cut across the fibers where you're going to have a lip (on the lip of the lid, for example) so that you avoid some chipout that can happen if not careful. The grain sort of reminds me of black and white straws all tightly stacked together. I used the palm because I thought the light/dark color of it would contrast well with the cherry.

Thanks for all the comments folks. Faust, I appreciate the "happy apple" name and that just might have sold it for me!
