I saw something like this years ago on a t.v. program about a shipwreck..(I think) and it always stuck in my mind & i wanted to try to make one. i believe it was called a 2 handled drinking bowl. This is a prototype from spalted black ash firewood. The handles are integral to the bowl. (turned from one piece) Was fun to figure out how to do.

Very nice, indeed. Intriguing enough to add this to my list of gotta-try-one-day.

Michelle,
That looks cool. I Googled it and came up with a Wikipedia on quaich.....who'd thunk it.

I have to admit that this is the first time I have seen a 2 handled drinking bowl! Definitely unique! Looks like it was fun to figure out the order of turning!

Looks great, Michelle! I need to try that when I actually have time to turn!

That sure makes for an interesting piece, I like that. What's the size? Diameter of the bowl by how long?

Leave it to Michelle to stretch the limits! Pretty neat, and an educational event, as well - thanks Josh.

Steve: this was just a prototype to see if I could turn it..the bowl is about 3 1/2 and about 10 inches total length. If I ever turn another, I believe if I can find wood big enough, I will make a larger bowl.

Considering the fact that the tugs I work on are on average 100 years old, I will have to look in the bilge to see if there are any of these lurking around down there. I always knew that sailors where two fisted drinkers, but I thought that meant one in each hand ;)

this was just a prototype to see if I could turn it..

Seeing your stuff, why, I'm thinking that statement is right funny. It's a really neat piece and I've been slowly wrapping my brain around doing one myself after seeing it and seeing the history of these instruments. Would make a great and unique gift!

Pretty cool and interesting background too! Curious why the two or more handles unless somewhat of a 'community' vessel handed off from one to another.
