There was a thread on the Vectric forum that made pictures into halftones. That is what the process is called. It is from ink printing where you either print or not so you break it down into different size dots to get gray

It's simply a blown up version of the standard screen printing / halftone method (think newspapers). If your graphics program doesn't already have the options, I'm sure you can find a free plug-in to do the same effect.

I saw the method demonstrated at Rob's Sign Camp. In this approach they used Aspire and a drill pattern using a 60 degree bit. It makes a nice pattern but it can be slow to produce.

For making unique photos with the laser I use PhotoVcarve and generate a preview image that I engrave onto wood. It is much faster than using the router and I like the diagonal line effect.

From the Mechmate Forum there are 2 pieces of software:

Download here:
http://www.students.tut.fi/~syvajar3...alftone_21.zip (http://www.students.tut.fi/~syvajar3/DXF_Halftone_21.zip)
and
jasondoriedotcom/page_cnc

Might be more suited to CNC but worth a look.

I have seen that done with rhinestone pattern programs like, StoneCut Pro (http://www.digitalartsolutions.com/software/stonecutpro.php) or rStones (http://macromonster.com/index.php?mod=descr&id_desc=148), rStones is the less expensive.
