Hi:

I got the new Lie- Nielsen catalog yesterday. It is the 2004 edition. Looks real nice, but they are EXPENSIVE!!! Does anyone here have the Low angle smoothing plane? Looks good!

Thanks

I know John Weber has the #164 also.........It has given him finishes BEYOND his dreams. I believe it is a great plane. The #62 is excellent too....

Bob

I have the #164 and a L-N #4 1/2. I was goofing on some birch last night and the 4 1/2 smoothed a swirl where the 164 left it pocked.

That 4 1/2 is sweet. I used one today at a show and it is ON THE LIST!

Hi Bob,
I own the standard block plane, the low angle jack plane, and the rabbit plane. The low angle block is next. Yes they are expensive, but I love them. The best quality plane you can buy!

Deneb (Lie-Nielsen rep at the Houston Woodworking show) recommended the 62.
He suggested the following planes as a greater starter set:
4 1/2 smoother
7 jointer
62 low angle smoother
and the rabbet block plane or low angle block plane.

Makes sense to me.

I have a 164 and find it very easy to adjust and use. The adjustable mouth is a breeze to use, and blade control is very positive. It can leave a glass smooth surface that is as good as any other plane I have. The smaller size also lets you use it sort of like a large block plane, and that can be helpful for end grain. I also have a 62, and I've had it several years, but the 164 is just as useful.
