Howdy everyone,

Well I got a little time to get my type 3 Bedrock 605C done last evening. Here's a couple pics...

<IMG SRC="http://www.terryhatfield.com/6051.JPG">

Here is the group so far. All of them have LN A2 blades.

<IMG SRC="http://www.terryhatfield.com/brs.JPG">

I have a 606C and another 604C in the works. I'm seriously addicted to these type 3's. :D

I also turned a few plane resto dollars into these from LV. The FedEx dude dropped them off yesterday as well.

I have wanted the scraper plane ever since I got into the hand tool deal and I couldn't resist the very cool new marking gauge.

Thanks for looking!!! Hope everyone is having a great weekend.

Terry,

Those are very, very Nice! ;) You did an outstanding job on the restoration. What thickness are the LN Blades that you put in? Did you use the original Chip Breaker or an After Market CB? How do the new blades perform compared to the original blades?

Congrats!

John,

Thanks!!!

The 607 and 605 have the .095 blades. The 604 has the .125. Yes, I screwed up...I meant to have the .125 for all of them but I really can't tell any difference between them. These planes feel rock solid with the LN blades. No sign of any chatter at all. The cut is effortless with these blades.

Terry,

Those look very nice (as all of your refurbs do)! You have a nice collection of beautiful Type 3's going there. I probably missed a post about it somewhere along the way, but now I see why you were selling some of those Stanley refurbs.

Let us know how you like the LV scraper; I'm thinking about that one, too.

Mike,

Zakly!!!! I've been refurbing some and selling them to help power the plane addiction.

I'll post the results when I get a chance to use the scraper plane.

Terry, or indeed anyone,

do you have a spare bed for a type 3/4 #607 or I would consider a #606 or #604.5?

I have a very clean example except for the broken/welded bed which is too distorted even for a user.

Thanks

John

Sorry John, wish I could help you but I have no spares at all.

What is it about the type 3's.......and.....

Terry, that's a fine looking fami...errrrrr group of planes you have there! I hear a lot of folks praising the attributes of the LN irons installed into the old "iron".:)

And FWIW, I think you'll really like the LV scraper! I love mine and I've even heard that some people like the LV version more than the LN version! Enjoy!:) :cool:

Roy,

Hmmm......there are lots of thing I like about the type 3's. First, it's neat that they are or nearly are 100 years old. The old wood is spectacular. The totes are thinner and more rounded and the wood is much more figured that the later wood..on mine anyway. I like the lever cap lettering and the really thin castings of these older planes is just plain cool. They are much more esthetically pleasing to me than the later less thinly machined castings.

The overall perfromance of the planes is great as well. They seem more solid to me. Not even a hint of chatter on any of them. The Bedrock design with it's one large mating surface for the frog to bed connection seems more substancial than the 4 contact points on the regular Stanley's.

I have all "C's". That is just my preference as well. I can't really tell any difference in the performance between the two, but I have noticed that the corrugated soles seem to require less lapping that the smooth ones. That is by far my least favorite step in the process so less lapping is a good thing.

Honestly, I just fell in love with my first type 3 604C so now I'm just trying to complete the set. :D

Good enough for me.........:cool:

There is no doubt in my mind the lettering "Stanley Bedrock" on the lever cap is THE COOLEST.....I LOVE THAT FEATURE!!!

I do prefer the flat topped sides though.......is there a old stanley that has both these features??? (flat top side & Lettering.....)???

Roy,

Actually the older Bedrock's type 1-3 say "Stanley R & L Co. Bedrock". Type 4 say's "Stanley Bedrock" as do the first of the square sides, type 5. The type 6's say "Bedrock". From type 7 on say "Stanley" with the orange background just like the regular planes.
