Looking for some info on a sargent 408. This is NOT a "VBM' model. Front knob still nice and dark, tote a little lighter in colour. lever cap has just the word SARGENT in a box. No "VBM" on the lever cap, or on the iron. Iron is nice and thick, and has No. 408 stamped on it. Age???? Haven't seen the frog, as of yet.

No clue on age, but a sargent 408 should be a good working stock type bench plane, one that you can get a lot of mileage out of. I kind of thought I remember seeing them as VBMs, but I'm by no means a sargent expert and have only ever had one. It was a well made plane, though missing a couple of parts and I parted it out.

The VBM era was 1910 to 1918. The Sargent in a rectangle logo on the lever cap started in 1919 and continued into the 50's. Can't help beyond that.

I have 5 or 6 Sargeant planes & really like them. The casting is heavier than the equivalent Stanley by about 20%. The extra weight is a plus in my view.
