I was encouraged by yesterdays response to my small hollow form so I decided to see if I could go even smaller. Here is the result.

By the way, the BIC lighter is real. The orange form is 1 3/4" tall and 3/4" diameter. It's hollowed out with about a 1/8" wall and heavy at the bottom. I had to make another hollowing tool out of a .150" allen wrench. I didn't want to take any chances of cutting it in two so I left it sort of thick. The ball on the top of the finial is about .080" round. The thinnest part is about .035" and it's about 11/16" long. C&C Always welcome. Thanks for looking.

Ed,
The only think I can think of to improve those little guys might be to carve a bunch of flowers on them. Obviously, I'm just kidding. These little guys show amazing tool control. Don't drop one into a pile of chips. I really enjoyed seeing these. Thanks.

I think you need to turn some small flowers or jewelry to put inside them!

I keep saying someday I'll make something small like these once I get a bigger lathe!

Wow! It's like half the size. (great job by the way, It's a perfect mini in everyway) Now turn a third one half the size of that one! Beautiful work Ed! Keep it up!

Now, that would strain my eyes - even with magnification!!!

+1 on the tool control. These are very nice forms and the scale is something that not many can do.

That is tiny! Great job Ed and they look nice as a set. Now just think of how much wood you could save, 1 nice chunk of burl might be good for 100 hollow forms!

That's really cool Ed! Did you have to add sandbags to your lathe to counter the forces when the blank was out-a-round??

Geez Ed... that's just twisted! Cool... but twisted...

Now that's funny!!! :D

No room for mistakes on that one, one catch and the whole thing is just another curly on the floor.

Rick,
My wife looked at these pictures a little while ago and that was her suggestion too. She wants three in the set. We'll see. That's going to be a real challenge.

Well Bravo Ed, for even considering that idea. Both of those are already pretty unbelievable!

I'd like to see the blanks before turning. Makes me think of the Lit'l Smokies commercial from a few years back where Al from "Home Improvement" was turning decorative toothpicks from a truckload of 4x4's. Very impressive work!

OK y'all, here is a micro photo of the smallest hollow vessel I have in my collection, sitting on the head of a nail! I didn't do the turning, just the buying and the photo! Now that I've posted the first image, I'm bound to show that Photoshop is not always required to change reality. The nail is a large tent stake that I found in a scrap metal dump many years ago, and it comes in handy for driving holes in hard packed earth among other uses.;)

Looks like these need a doll house to showcase their size.

I have considered that. Also, 1 bottle of glue would last forever, I would never need to buy dye again or spray enamel....one can would last and last and last. :)

Steve,
Just to be on the safe side, I bolted it to the floor. Don't want one of those suckers to get loose. :D

Michelle,
Mine are 2.75 from the drug store but I have a Jewelers hood ordered from Amazon that will give me 10x magnification.

Ryan,
Here is a picture of the blank with a finial turned on the end of it. It's about .900" square on the end and about 2 1/2" long.

Jamie,
That is impressive. This is the smallest one I've done. It stands about 7/8" tall and is about .380" diameter.

Your craftsmanship and details are just outstanding, but don't drop the finial in the shavings as I have done!
