This is the biggest hollowform I've ever turned. And I learned a few lessons on it. First, my tools were stretched to their limit, actually beyond, and second I need a bigger set of calipers or a laser. I wasn't able to get the walls as thin as I wanted. It's about 1/4" at the top but gets thicker down into the bottom area. The wood is a piece of wood I got from Got Wood, it's Ambrosia Maple from a 12" x 6" bowl blank. The finished size ended up about 11 3/4" x 5 3/4". Still working on the Southwest style but I like how this one turned out. Finish is AO and Beall buffed.

.....I like how this one turned out.Me, too!!! Very nice wood, Curt, and I believe you nailed the form quite well. BIG sucker! Doing that with hand hollowing would be a chore, and doing it without a laser would be.....well, let's just say, not for me! Love the laser!

Curt, you did a nice job displaying the beauty of the wood with that form. I have all kinds of calipers but still revert back to a bent piece of 3/16" zink plated rod like they sell in hardware store displays. It has enough "memory" to it so you have to over bend it to a useful shape, then use it by "eyeballing" the gap left over after it is in position. Adjustable for wall thickness as well as form shape, has appeared in numerous Ellsworth articles.

Man oh man, do I ever like this! I could go on all day about it but I'll just take a que from Kelly Dunn and tell you that after you get done reading all of the comments this is sure to draw, you're gonna need a bigger hat...

Looks like you have that form down pat. The wood and the finish are very well done also.

Curt,
That a big one, alright. The shape looks good to my northeast eye. The finish came out really well. It's going to look good on someone's mantle. Hopefully a nice deep mantle.

Beautiful form and finish. Good choice on going with a more modest shine on the finish. So far all of my hollow forms have been end grain, I have to give this style a try.

Curt, that is one beautiful piece! Love the form and the wood. I especially like the opening not being too small, I think it looks good on this shape. Does it have a home yet? ;)
