Had a great friend of mine retired 3/31/12 from AT&T with 38 yrs. His retirement party is June 9th. When I was with the FAA he would work on our phone lines for all the equipment we had. There were sometimes in the middle of a thunderstorm or snow storm that the two of us were out getting things taken care of. He loved nature and watching deer so thought of burning a deer on a platter. It is 11 3/4" across and has inlace in the rim. I finished with Target Coatings EM 6000 WB lacquer. I also made him a Ultra Cigar Pen. Pen blank is Indian rosewood.

Nice work on both. What are you using to burn with? What tips do you find most useful? I'm about to get a burner myself. Mainly for signing my name since Sharpies have disappointed me several times lately. I figure I might as well get a decent one with some tips so I have the option of trying some things like your platter one day.

Thanks to all. He has been a good friend. I had to laugh as one of his old co-workers and another friend from AT & T I had worked with stopped by to say hello. When I showed him he said maybe I should give it to him privately so I don't show up all the other gifts.

Jeremy I use a dual pen Optima II. I bought 5 pens but found out I only use 3 of them all the time. Two of them I have never used. I love it and it burns nicely.

Eric I used the airbrush on this. I got that new Paasche Talon TG-3F with the fan pattern air cap like a paint gun. It has a .66 needle and I like the way it sprays. I did get a small HVLP gun with a 1.0 mm needle and a 1.4 mm needle. I am going to try it on the next project.

Jim B. I got the in-lace from Craft Supply. They call it InLace Decorative Inlay. It is on the top left of page 79. They say 4 hrs but I let it sit overnight. I checked it after 4 hrs and it still had kind of a slight tacky feel. So I figured maybe humidity and it was cool in the shop. I set it out in the sun for the afternoon and then finish turning it the next morning.
